South Africa has rowed back on a decision to exit the International Criminal Court (ICC).

President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Wednesday morning that he had made a mistake, and confirmed that South Africa would remain an ICC signatory. This comes as South Africa is set to host the BRICS summit in August, which would see leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — including Russian President Vladimir Putin — travel to South Africa.

The ICC has issued an international arrest warrant for Putin for crimes committed in Ukraine, and as a signatory of the ICC, South Africa would be required to detain him.
